The best meal delivery for weight loss is the meal delivery service whose menu options fit a calorie and protein meal plan your clinician or dietitian agrees with, makes full nutrition numbers available for every meal, and carries a weekly price you can keep paying for months. Full numbers on every meal are a green light to keep reading. The research below does not crown a meal delivery brand, so choose a meal delivery service with the checklist below. It does show that programs that include meal replacements produced more weight loss at one year than programs without them in a 2019 review of 23 trials, and the size of the difference varied with the level of support. I am not a medical professional, so this guide gives you a checklist, the evidence, and what one meal delivery service’s own site says about its menu, with the date it was read.

Which meal delivery service is best for weight loss?
Editors disagree on the best meal delivery service for weight loss, and that tells you something. Fortune’s meal delivery list, updated October 16, 2026 and reviewed by a registered dietitian, names Factor best overall, and the page says the publication may earn affiliate revenue from its links. Garage Gym Reviews, in a meal delivery list updated June 2, 2026, names Diet-To-Go best overall after what it describes as testing more than 40 meal delivery services on cost per meal, ease of prep, ingredient quality, calorie count, variety and taste. Two meal delivery roundups, two different winners.
Meal delivery roundups like these are editorial opinion, Fortune says it may earn affiliate revenue from its links (this page has affiliate links too), and a ranking is not a trial of weight loss. Use these meal delivery service lists to build a short list, then check each meal delivery service against the checklist below and read its full menu and price.
Does meal delivery help weight loss? Read the weight loss research
Programs that include meal replacements, which are products that stand in for some of your meals, helped adults lose more weight at one year than programs without them. A 2019 systematic review in Obesity Reviews pooled 23 randomized trials with 7,884 adults. People assigned a meal replacement diet lost 1.44 kg (about 3 pounds) more than people on other diets, and in the one comparison where the meal replacement diet came with an enhanced level of support, the difference against alternative diets with regular support was 6.13 kg (about 13.5 pounds). Three of the authors report research grants from commercial weight loss companies, and the abstract does not say which products were tested, so it cannot tell you whether any one meal delivery service performs the same way.
A 2021 meta-analysis in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics pooled 22 randomized trials with 1,982 adults with overweight or obesity. Meal replacement low-energy diets beat food-based low-energy diets by a small margin, and plans that took 60 percent or more of daily energy from the replacements showed the largest effect. That is a weight loss result about meal replacements. It does not prove that ordering prepared food entrees from a meal delivery service every week produces the same result.
What do trials of commercial weight loss programs show?
An updated systematic review in Annals of Internal Medicine looked at 45 studies, 39 of them randomized trials, of named commercial programs. Nutrisystem produced at least 3.8 percent greater weight loss than control or counseling at 3 months. Jenny Craig produced at least 4.9 percent greater loss at 12 months. The authors, who reported no conflicts, warned that many trials were short, had high attrition and lacked blinding, and that evidence on adherence and harms was limited.
Do weight loss testimonials and stories on company websites match the trials?
Not closely. A 2017 study in Obesity read the home pages and testimonials of 24 randomly selected commercial programs and compared them with randomized trials, which existed for only 10 of the 24. The authors described the weight loss in testimonials as extreme, with median losses by program of 10.7 to 49.5 kg, and the medians exceeded what trial participants achieved. Treat before and after weight loss stories as marketing, and treat the trial averages as the realistic weight loss range.
What should you check before you order meal delivery?
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) tells people to ask whether a doctor or other certified health professional oversees a program, what the total cost is from beginning to end, whether you must buy special meals, and whether the program has been studied with published results. Those questions translate directly to a meal delivery service. Here is the checklist I would use to pick any meal delivery service. Read each row before you order.
| What to check | Why it matters | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Calories per meal and per day | NIDDK says a weight loss program should include a healthy, reduced-calorie eating and drinking plan. | Meal delivery menu page, where the numbers should be available for every meal |
| Protein per meal | Needs depend on age, sex, health and activity, per MedlinePlus, so a clinician or dietitian sets your target. | Nutrition panel, if it is available for each meal |
| Sodium per meal | The FDA page cites the Dietary Guidelines limit of less than 2,300 mg of sodium a day for adults, and says 20 percent of the Daily Value or more per serving is high. | Nutrition panel, if the numbers are available |
| Added sugar per meal | The Dietary Guidelines advise keeping added sugars under 10 percent of calories, and the FDA Daily Value is 50 grams. | Nutrition panel, if the numbers are available |
| Who designs the menu | NIDDK says to ask who oversees the weight loss program and what training the staff have. | About or science page, if the information is available |
| Total price | NIDDK says to ask for the total cost of the weight loss program from beginning to end, including any special meals or supplements you must buy. A first order meal delivery price is not the ongoing price. | Meal delivery checkout page, shipping policy, any price list the company makes available |
| Minimum meal order, skip and cancel rules | You need to be able to pause without paying for meals you will not eat. | Meal delivery FAQ page |
| Allergy and medical diet handling | NIDDK says to ask whether special foods can be changed for allergies and preferences. | FAQ page, customer care, if the information is available |
Sources for the table: FDA on sodium, FDA on added sugars and MedlinePlus on dietary proteins.
Before you order, read the full review and the full menu, and check the price per meal for the first order and for every order after it. Check whether a free shipping offer applies to the first order only. Check the home delivery area, the box size, and how many meals each plan includes per week. Check every service on the same points so the options are easy to compare.
How many calories and how much protein should meal delivery meals have?
There is no single number in these sources. MedlinePlus says how much protein you need depends on your age, sex, health and level of physical activity. NIDDK says a weight loss program should include a healthy, reduced-calorie eating and drinking plan, and that experts recommend an initial goal of 5 to 10 percent of starting weight within 6 months. For a 200 pound woman that is about 10 to 20 pounds. Ask your clinician or a registered dietitian for your daily calorie and protein range for your diet, then pick only the meals on the meal delivery menu that land inside it once you add snacks and drinks.
How fast should weight come off on a meal delivery plan?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes a gradual, steady pace of about 1 to 2 pounds a week and says people who lose weight that way are more likely to keep it off. NIDDK says to stay away from programs that make promises like “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!” If a meal delivery service advertises faster results than that, read the fine print before you order.
Is a meal kit or prepared meal delivery better for weight loss?
A meal kit gives you fresh ingredients and a recipe, so you still prep and cook. Prepared meal delivery arrives portioned and needs only heating. The studies above looked at meal replacements and commercial weight loss programs, not meal kits, so none of them shows one format beating the other. If your obstacle is time, prepared meal delivery removes more of the prep. If you enjoy cooking and want to practice portions, a meal kit fits. Either way, run the checklist on the nutrition numbers for the meals inside.
BistroMD meal delivery review: what does the company say about its meals and price?
BistroMD is a prepared meal delivery service. BistroMD’s own pages were read on October 21, 2026, so you can see what a maker’s claims look like next to the checklist. These are the company’s statements, not findings. My separate BistroMD review covers the meal delivery service in more depth.
- The how it works page says meals arrive frozen with dry ice, heat in 5 minutes or less, and come from “150+ dietitian-designed meals to choose from each week.” It says the smallest meal plan includes 10 meals and that you can skip or cancel.
- The flexible delivery page lists averages per meal of 25 to 30 g protein, 25 g net carbs, 5 g added sugar or less and 500 mg sodium or less, and shows calories and macros for sample meals.
- The how it works page also says most meals have 500 mg of sodium or less, and that the Heart Healthy program uses no more than 600 mg per meal.
- That page says “Your first week as low as $5.50 per meal.” The women’s program page offers a different first order price deal, 50 percent off and free shipping. Neither gives the ongoing weekly price, which is the number the NIDDK cost question is asking about.
If you decide to read more about this meal delivery service, the BistroMD meal delivery site shows current menus and offers, and your clinician or dietitian should decide whether a meal plan fits your health needs.
When does meal delivery not fit your weight loss plan?
Meal delivery solves a meal logistics problem, such as time and prep. Meal delivery does not solve a medical one. The CDC advises talking with your health care provider if you are concerned about your weight or have questions about your medications. If you have diabetes, kidney disease, a history of disordered eating, or you are pregnant or nursing, ask your clinician whether a fixed meal delivery menu fits your medicines and medical diet. If you take a GLP-1 medicine, ask your prescriber or dietitian about your protein needs, and see my GLP-1 meal plan guide for meal planning on one. For building meals without a meal delivery service, see nutrition and meal planning for women over 40.
This page is information, not medical advice. Talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian before you change your diet or how you eat, especially if you manage a health condition or take medicine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is meal delivery cheaper than groceries, and what is the price?
None of the sources above gives a general price answer for meal delivery, and it depends on your household and what you cook now. Divide the full weekly meal delivery price, including shipping and extras, by the meals you will actually eat, then compare that meal price with what you spend now. NIDDK’s advice to ask for the total cost from beginning to end is the right frame.
Will I keep the weight off after I stop ordering meal delivery?
The weight loss evidence is thin. The meal replacement review measured weight at one year, and the commercial program review said many trials were short and that some effects of very low calorie programs weakened after 6 months when that was reported. NIDDK suggests asking any weight loss program how long participants keep weight off. Plan for the meals you will eat when the meal delivery boxes stop.
Can I order meal delivery while taking a GLP-1 medicine?
Ask your prescriber before you order. Some prepared meal delivery services market plans to GLP-1 users. BistroMD’s homepage on October 21, 2026 says any of its plans provides the protein and fiber “needed to maximize GLP-1 results,” which is a company statement, not a finding. Your prescriber or dietitian knows your dose, side effects and protein needs.
Are meal delivery reviews and top ten lists trustworthy?
Read meal delivery reviews as opinion, and read the full price and menu details yourself. One major list says openly that it may earn affiliate revenue, and the 2017 Obesity study found that website testimonials reported more weight loss than randomized trials did. This page also contains affiliate links, which is why this meal delivery guide sticks to nutrition numbers, cited studies and the company’s own words.
What if a meal delivery service will not make full nutrition facts available?
If a meal delivery service will not make full nutrition facts available for each meal on its menu, treat that as a reason to pick other meal delivery services. Without those numbers you cannot check the meals against your weight loss meal plan.
Do I need a dietitian if I use a meal delivery service?
It is worth asking, especially if you have a health condition. A dietitian can set your calorie and protein range and tell you which menus or programs to pick for your diet and your food preferences. A meal delivery service calling its meals dietitian designed is not a dietitian designing your meal plan.
