Does sermorelin work? It does what it was built to do: in small studies it raised growth hormone and IGF-1 in older adults, and in a larger open-label study it sped up growth in children with growth hormone deficiency. For the reasons most women search for it, weight loss, sleep, energy and anti-aging, the human evidence is thin, mostly in men, and several trials measured no change. The studies behind that are an NIA study of older men and a 110-child growth study.

As my about page says, I started a GLP-1 in May 2024. That is a different drug, and this page does not rely on anyone’s personal use of sermorelin, so everything below comes from the sources linked. This page is the evidence check for our sermorelin therapy overview.

What is sermorelin and how does it work?

Sermorelin is a lab-made copy of the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), the signal your hypothalamus sends to the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. A drug review in BioDrugs calls it the shortest synthetic peptide with the full biological activity of GHRH. Growth hormone then prompts the liver to make IGF-1, the blood marker most studies below track, per a 2025 clinical review in Frontiers in Aging.

Researchers were interested because it works through your own pituitary instead of replacing the hormone. The introduction to the 1992 NIA study notes that GHRH given to growth hormone-deficient children and young adults increases growth hormone and IGF-1 while preserving the physiological pattern of growth hormone release. This page covers sermorelin only. Other peptides have their own evidence and their own FDA status.

Does sermorelin work for children with growth hormone deficiency?

In one multicenter study, yes, and it is the use with the most published data. In the Geref International Study Group trial, 110 previously untreated prepubertal children with growth hormone deficiency got a bedtime injection under the skin for up to a year. Of the 86 children eligible for the efficacy analysis, average height velocity rose from 4.1 cm a year at baseline to 8.0 cm a year at 6 months and 7.2 cm a year at 12 months, and 74 percent were considered good responders at 6 months. It was an open-label study. The BioDrugs review called the data limited, said the drug worked in some prepubertal children, and said the effect on final adult height was not yet determined.

A review of the pediatric studies noted that height gains with sermorelin were smaller than those reported for somatropin (injected growth hormone), though the two had not been compared head to head.

Is sermorelin FDA approved?

Not anymore. The brand Geref (sermorelin acetate) was approved in 1990 as a diagnostic test for the pituitary and in 1997 for children with growth failure from idiopathic growth hormone deficiency. A 2013 Federal Register notice says the maker, EMD Serono, discontinued the products in 2008 and requested withdrawal of the approvals. FDA announced the withdrawal effective June 18, 2009, and determined the products were not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness. The notice lists only those two indications; adult aging and weight loss are not among them.

FDA’s compounding questions and answers page (read October 26, 2026) says compounded drugs are not FDA approved and that FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed. FDA’s list of bulk drug substances nominated for compounding (updated May 14, 2026, read October 26, 2026) does not name sermorelin in any of its three categories, so there is no FDA category to point to either way. For the practical side, see how to get sermorelin.

What happened when sermorelin was tested in older adults?

The adult studies are small and old. Three used sermorelin or a close variant, and they treated 10, 11 and 19 people. All were published in 1992 or 1997.

Does sermorelin raise growth hormone and IGF-1?

Growth hormone rose in all three, and IGF-1 rose in two of them. In the 1992 NIA study, 10 healthy men with an average age of 68 injected GHRH 1 to 29 under the skin twice a day for 14 days at two doses. At the higher dose (1 mg), their 24-hour growth hormone and IGF-1 levels no longer differed from those of nine young men, and fasting glucose and blood pressure did not change.

The 1997 study from Khorram and colleagues used a close analog (the same 29 amino acid fragment with norleucine substituted at position 27). It was a single-blind trial in 10 women and 9 men aged 55 to 71: 4 weeks of saline, then 16 weeks of nightly analog. Nighttime growth hormone rose in both sexes, IGF-1 rose within 2 weeks, and the growth hormone response was sustained through the study.

Did it change muscle, fat or weight?

Mostly not. In the Khorram study, body weight was unaffected, lean body mass rose in men only, and there were no other changes in body composition or bone density in either sex. The 1997 Vittone study gave 11 healthy men aged 64 to 76 a 2 mg injection every night for 6 weeks. Growth hormone release rose, but IGF-1 did not. Two of six strength measures and one endurance test improved, while weight, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio and scan measures of muscle and fat did not change. The authors concluded that single nightly doses appear less effective than several doses a day.

Do the studies include women?

Barely. The 1992 NIA study and the Vittone study enrolled men only. Khorram is the one study here with women, 10 of them, and they had no increase in lean mass, insulin sensitivity, well-being or libido, while men did.

Does sermorelin work? Claims versus the evidence

Common claim What published studies show Verdict
Raises growth hormone and IGF-1 Shown in older men and in men and women aged 55 to 71 (1992, 1997); IGF-1 did not rise in the 6-week, single-nightly-dose study Studied, with caveats
Helps children with growth hormone deficiency grow Height velocity rose from 4.1 to 7.2 cm a year at 12 months in an open-label study of 86 evaluable children (Thorner 1996) Studied; the only treatment use FDA ever approved (approval since withdrawn)
Builds muscle Lean mass rose in men only in one trial; two of six strength tests improved in another, with no change in scan-measured muscle Limited
Burns fat or lowers weight No weight change in the Khorram or Vittone studies; no other body composition change in either sex in Khorram Not shown
Improves sleep Sleep quality questionnaire unaffected in both sexes in Khorram Not shown
Improves energy, mood or libido General well-being and libido improved in men but not women in one trial of 19 people Limited, men only
Anti-aging A 2025 review says long-term safety and efficacy of growth hormone based therapies for healthy aging remain uncertain Unproven
Works as tablets, lozenges, strips or sprays The studies on this page gave it by injection under the skin Not covered by these studies

Does sermorelin work for weight loss?

The trials above do not show it. Body weight did not change in the Khorram or Vittone studies, and Khorram reported no body composition changes beyond lean mass in men. An FDA-approved GHRH analog, tesamorelin, is a longer version of the same signal. Its Egrifta SV label on DailyMed (posted July 31, 2026, read October 26, 2026) covers excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected adults with lipodystrophy, and states it is not indicated for weight loss management because it has a weight neutral effect. It is a different drug in a different population, so it does not show what sermorelin does.

If weight loss is the goal, the GLP-1 drugs are the class with large published trials, such as semaglutide in the STEP 1 trial of 1,961 adults and tirzepatide in SURMOUNT-1, and my GLP-1 weight loss guide lays out what those trials measured. For other peptides, see the best peptides for weight loss.

Does sermorelin improve sleep, energy or memory?

Sleep did not improve in Khorram, the only study described on this page that measured it: sleep quality on questionnaires was unaffected in both sexes. Well-being improved in men only. A related drug has a more interesting cognition result. A 2012 NIH-funded trial of 152 adults aged 55 to 87 (66 with mild cognitive impairment) gave tesamorelin or placebo for 20 weeks and found a favorable effect on cognition, with IGF-1 up 117 percent and body fat down 7.4 percent. That was tesamorelin, not sermorelin.

How long does sermorelin take to work?

It depends on what is measured, and the studies report only a few time points. Growth hormone and IGF-1 shifted within 14 days in the NIA study and IGF-1 rose within 2 weeks in Khorram. Strength measures changed after 6 weeks in the Vittone study, lean mass rose in men after 16 weeks in Khorram, and children’s growth was measured at 6 and 12 months. No trial here reports a week by week schedule of how people feel, so promises of better sleep by week 3 are not drawn from this research.

What are the side effects and risks of sermorelin?

In the studies above, few adverse effects were reported. The BioDrugs review lists transient facial flushing and injection-site pain as the most common in children. In Khorram, the only adverse effect was transient hyperlipidemia (raised blood fats), resolved by the end of the study.

The studies are too small and short to settle long-term safety. A 2018 review of growth hormone secretagogues found few long-term controlled studies, noted some concern about rising blood glucose from reduced insulin sensitivity, and called for evidence on cancer incidence and mortality. For injected growth hormone itself, a 2007 systematic review in Annals of Internal Medicine found small changes in body composition (about 2.1 kg less fat and 2.1 kg more lean mass) alongside more swelling, joint pain and carpal tunnel syndrome, and concluded it cannot be recommended as an anti-aging therapy. That is not sermorelin. My page on sermorelin side effects goes deeper.

How strong is the evidence that sermorelin works?

The best evidence is for hormone levels and the pediatric use, and it is weak or absent for everything else. The adult trials treated fewer than 20 people each, ran from 2 weeks to about 5 months, and were published in the 1990s. A 2006 editorial in Clinical Interventions in Aging argued that sermorelin might beat growth hormone for older adults, but it was an opinion piece, not a trial.

What should you ask a prescriber about sermorelin?

Ask whether the product is FDA approved or compounded, and by which pharmacy. Ask which blood tests will show whether it is working, since the studies tracked IGF-1. Ask how it fits with any other medicines you take, including a GLP-1.

I am not a registered dietitian or a medical doctor, and nothing here is a recommendation to start, stop or change any medicine. Talk with a licensed prescriber or pharmacist before using any growth hormone-releasing peptide, especially if you have diabetes, since a 2018 review noted concern about rising blood glucose with these compounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sermorelin work for someone over 60?

The adult studies were in older adults. The NIA study averaged 68 years, the Vittone study enrolled men aged 64 to 76, and Khorram enrolled adults aged 55 to 71. Growth hormone rose in all three; IGF-1 rose in the NIA and Khorram studies but not in Vittone. They show a hormone response, not better health.

Does sermorelin work for women?

The evidence is very limited. Of the sermorelin-type trials described here, only Khorram included women, 10 of 19 people. Growth hormone and IGF-1 rose in women, but the lean mass, insulin sensitivity, well-being and libido gains were seen in men only.

Does sublingual or oral sermorelin work?

The studies on this page gave sermorelin by injection under the skin. None of them tested a tablet, lozenge, film strip or nasal spray, so they cannot tell you whether those forms work. FDA also says it does not verify the safety, effectiveness or quality of compounded drugs before they are marketed.

Does sermorelin work for muscle growth?

Only a little in the older adults studied. Lean body mass increased in men but not women in Khorram, and in the Vittone study two of six strength measures improved while scan-measured muscle did not change. None of the studies tested young, healthy people training for muscle.

Is sermorelin the same as HGH?

No. Sermorelin is a copy of the signal that tells your pituitary to release growth hormone, while HGH is the hormone itself. The 2007 review above covered injected growth hormone, so its findings should not be assumed to apply to sermorelin.
