How to Get Wegovy: Steps, Eligibility and Safe Pharmacies

To get Wegovy, you need a prescription from a licensed clinician, and then you fill it at a pharmacy. That is the whole path, and the details that trip women up are eligibility, insurance approval and avoiding fake sellers. The Wegovy prescribing information (revised June 2026) is the rulebook for who it is approved for, and I walk through each step below. What are the steps to get Wegovy?

The steps run in order: check whether you fit the label, see a licensed clinician, get insurance approval if your plan asks for it, choose a pharmacy, and start. NovoCare, the maker’s patient site, covers much of the same ground on its Wegovy page (read October 22, 2026): Wegovy is a prescription medication, you can check your coverage, you choose the daily pill or weekly pen, then pick home delivery or a local pharmacy. The table shows what to have ready at each stage.

Who can get Wegovy?

Adults can get Wegovy when a clinician decides they fit one of its approved uses. The label’s indications section says the Wegovy injection reduces excess body weight and helps maintain weight loss in adults and children 12 and older with obesity, and in adults with overweight who also have at least one weight-related condition. The tablets carry the weight indication for adults only. It also lists reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death in adults with established cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight, and, for the injection only, a liver indication (noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced scarring) for adults. All of these are used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

The indication text itself does not give a numeric BMI cutoff. The main trial, STEP 1, enrolled 1,961 adults without diabetes who had a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition, according to its published abstract. That is a trial rule, and your clinician applies the label to you.

Who should not get Wegovy?

The label carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors. In rodents, semaglutide caused them at clinically relevant exposures, and it is unknown whether Wegovy causes them in humans. Wegovy is contraindicated for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, and for anyone with a prior serious allergic reaction to semaglutide. The label also says weight loss offers no benefit to a pregnant patient and may cause fetal harm, and that Wegovy should be stopped when pregnancy is recognized. Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

How do you get a Wegovy prescription from a doctor?

Ask a clinician who can prescribe, such as your primary care provider, an obesity medicine specialist or a telehealth clinician, and let them review your history. NovoCare’s page links to a tool for finding a doctor you can meet virtually. Your own prescriber also knows your other medicines and conditions, which is useful because the label’s warnings are about your personal and family health history.

Can you get Wegovy online?

Yes, you can start with an online clinician, but the same rule applies: a licensed prescriber has to decide. The FDA’s page on unapproved GLP-1 drugs (content current as of October 1, 2026) tells people to get a prescription from a doctor and fill it at a state-licensed pharmacy, and its telehealth red flags include deep discounts and no licensed prescriber screening. If you decide to try telehealth, here is what two services say about themselves on their own sites, read October 22, 2026. GobyMeds lists brand-name Wegovy among its weight loss options, says its care is prescribed online by licensed U.S. providers, and says treatment is offered only if a provider decides it may be appropriate after review. Shed says a licensed U.S. provider writes your plan, lists Wegovy next to compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, and states that compounded medications are not FDA-approved. Neither site decides for you, and a provider can say no.

What is prior authorization for Wegovy?

Prior authorization is approval from your health plan before it will cover a prescription. HealthCare.gov defines it as approval from a health plan that may be required before you get a service or fill a prescription. NovoCare’s page says that if your plan covers Wegovy, your insurer sets the cost.

Where do you fill a Wegovy prescription?

You fill it at a pharmacy, and NovoCare’s page lists two options: NovoCare Pharmacy with home delivery, or a local retail pharmacy for pickup. The same page says Wegovy comes as a daily pill or a weekly pen, and the label lists injection pens and syringes plus tablets in four strengths.

Whichever pharmacy you choose, check its license. The FDA’s online pharmacy guidance, How to Buy Medicines Safely From an Online Pharmacy (current as of January 2025), says safe pharmacies always require a doctor’s prescription, give a physical U.S. address and phone number, have a licensed pharmacist on staff to answer questions, and are licensed with a state board of pharmacy.

Can you get Wegovy through Medicare?

Medicare.gov says that starting July 1, 2026, Medicare covers Wegovy (injection or tablet) under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge for people with Part D drug coverage, with a $50 copayment for a one-month supply. Its weight loss drugs page (no date shown, read October 22, 2026) lists three qualifying groups: BMI of 35 or higher, BMI of 30 or higher with a condition such as uncontrolled high blood pressure or chronic kidney disease at stage 3a or higher, and BMI of 27 or higher with a condition such as prediabetes or a previous heart attack or stroke.

Your prescriber has to send the prescription to the pharmacy and, when requested, complete prior authorization, and the page says the prescriber must certify that you are using the drug as part of a lifestyle program. The page also says you are not eligible for the Bridge if you already get these drugs through your Part D plan. The page also says you are not eligible for the Bridge if you have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea or fatty liver disease, and you must be 18 or older. Call 1-800-MEDICARE or your plan with questions about your own case.

How do you avoid fake or unapproved Wegovy?

Buy only with a prescription from a licensed clinician, fill it at a state-licensed pharmacy, and treat a very low price as a warning sign. The FDA says unapproved GLP-1 products skip FDA review for safety, effectiveness and quality, and that counterfeit Ozempic has entered the U.S. supply chain. It also says illegal online sellers may offer counterfeit or mis-dosed products and that some labels name pharmacies that did not make the drug.

The FDA says compounded versions are not FDA-approved and should be used only when an approved drug cannot meet a patient’s medical needs. It reports dosing mistakes that led to adverse events, some requiring hospitalization, and says that as of May 31, 2026 it had received 990 reports of adverse events associated with compounded semaglutide, likely underreported because state-licensed pharmacies that are not outsourcing facilities are not required to report them. What should you expect after you get Wegovy?

Expect a slow start: the label’s injection schedule begins at 0.25 mg once weekly for weeks 1 to 4 and steps up on a set schedule, with a usual maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly. The tablet schedule starts at 1.5 mg daily for 30 days. Your prescriber sets your plan, and I am only describing what the label says.

In STEP 1, mean body weight fell 14.9 percent with semaglutide 2.4 mg versus 2.4 percent with placebo over 68 weeks, and both groups also had lifestyle support. The trial was funded by Novo Nordisk, and nausea and diarrhea were the most common side effects, usually mild to moderate and temporary, per the STEP 1 abstract. My own experience is not medical advice: I was 47 and about 68 pounds overweight when I started GLP-1 injections in May 2024, and I lost 31 pounds in 14 months. Trial averages are reported as a percent of starting body weight, so my pounds are not a direct comparison, and results vary a lot from person to person. Plan for the long term too. In a follow-up of 327 STEP 1 participants after treatment and lifestyle support stopped, people regained 11.6 percentage points of their lost weight within a year, and the authors say the findings suggest ongoing treatment is required, according to the extension abstract. It was an exploratory analysis in a subset of the trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get Wegovy without insurance?

Yes, a prescription can be filled and paid for out of pocket. NovoCare’s page lists self-pay prices and a separate savings offer for commercially insured patients, and says government beneficiaries are excluded from that offer. The prices and end dates on that page are labeled limited time, so read the current terms before you order.

Can a telehealth provider prescribe brand-name Wegovy?

Some telehealth services say they do. GobyMeds and Shed both list Wegovy on their own sites, and a licensed provider still has to decide whether it fits you. If a service promises a prescription before anyone reviews your history, treat that as a red flag.

Can I get Wegovy if my BMI is under 27?

The label’s weight indication covers obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, and a separate indication covers heart attack and stroke risk in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. Your clinician applies those to your health. Ask them directly rather than relying on a BMI number alone.

Does Wegovy come as a pill?

Yes. The current label covers once-daily tablets in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg strengths as well as the weekly injection, and NovoCare’s page describes a daily pill or weekly pen. Ask your prescriber which form suits you.

Is it safe to buy Wegovy from a website that does not ask for a prescription?

No. The FDA lists skipping the prescription as a warning sign of an unsafe online pharmacy, along with deep discounts and no licensed pharmacist. Counterfeit and mis-dosed GLP-1 products are a documented problem.

What happens if I stop taking Wegovy?

In the STEP 1 extension, participants regained about two-thirds of their lost weight a year after stopping treatment. Talk with your prescriber before changing anything, because stopping and starting is their decision to make with you.
