GLP-1 weight loss means taking a prescription medication that copies a natural hormone involved in appetite, and the FDA has approved several of these drugs for adults with obesity, or with overweight plus a related health condition (Wegovy label; Zepbound label; Foundayo label). Patients in the trials lost an average of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks on Wegovy and 20.9% over 72 weeks on the top Zepbound dose, against 2.4% and 3.1% on placebo (STEP 1 trial; SURMOUNT-1 trial).
I’m Judy, and I’m not a doctor. This page is the map for the questions people search most, and many sections point to a deeper page. My own result sits near the end, labeled as my experience, with the trial averages beside it.
What Is GLP-1 and How Does It Cause Weight Loss?
GLP-1 is a hormone your body makes. The FDA label for Wegovy calls it a regulator of appetite and calorie intake, with receptors in parts of the brain that handle appetite (label, mechanism of action). Semaglutide binds that receptor. Tirzepatide, the drug in Zepbound, activates the GLP-1 receptor and a second one called GIP (label, mechanism of action).
The NIDDK, part of the National Institutes of Health, explains that some of these medications may help you feel less hungry or full sooner, and that studies show they work best alongside healthy eating and activity (NIDDK, prescription medications for overweight and obesity). The labels state the same: pair the drug with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
Which GLP-1 Drugs Are Approved for Weight Loss?
On the DailyMed labels I read on October 15, 2026, the approved options include Wegovy (semaglutide, a weekly injection and a tablet), Zepbound (tirzepatide, a weekly injection) and Foundayo (orforglipron, a daily pill), each including adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition (label; label; label).
Ozempic is not on that list. Its label covers blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes, plus heart and kidney protection in people with diabetes, and weight loss is not a listed use (label, indications). My page on Ozempic for weight loss sets that label beside the trial results, and Ozempic vs Wegovy compares the two, which share semaglutide but carry different approved uses.
Which GLP-1 Is Best for Weight Loss?
No single drug is best for every woman, and your prescriber chooses based on your history. The most direct comparison is SURMOUNT-5, a 72 week trial of 751 adults with obesity and no diabetes, where tirzepatide averaged a 20.2% loss and semaglutide 13.7% (SURMOUNT-5 trial, PubMed). It was open label and funded by Eli Lilly, which makes tirzepatide, so it is one piece of evidence.
How Much Weight Do You Lose on GLP-1 Medications?
STEP 1 randomized 1,961 adults with obesity, or overweight plus a related condition, and no diabetes. By week 68 the semaglutide group had lost 14.9% and the placebo group 2.4%, and 86.4% of the semaglutide group lost at least 5% (STEP 1 trial, PubMed). SURMOUNT-1 enrolled 2,539 adults without diabetes and found average losses of 15.0%, 19.5% and 20.9% on 5, 10 and 15 mg of tirzepatide, against 3.1% on placebo at week 72 (SURMOUNT-1 trial, PubMed).
Those are averages, and the NIDDK notes that results vary by medication and by person (NIDDK). For the STEP 1 numbers in pounds, read Wegovy before and after.
How Long Does GLP-1 Take to Work?
Months, because the dose starts low and steps up. The Zepbound label starts at 2.5 mg weekly for 4 weeks, then adds 2.5 mg steps after at least 4 weeks each (label, dosage), and the big trials measured results at 68 and 72 weeks. The NIDDK states that most loss on weight medications happens in the first 6 months (NIDDK). The full timeline is in how long does Ozempic take to work.
Do GLP-1 Medications Work for Women Without Diabetes?
On average, yes, in the main weight trials. STEP 1 and SURMOUNT-1 both excluded patients with diabetes, and women made up most of the participants, 74% in the Wegovy study and 68% in the Zepbound study (label, clinical studies; label, clinical studies). The Zepbound label reports a body weight reduction irrespective of age and sex.
The average age was 46 and 45. Neither trial was built only around women over 40, and an average is not a promise for one person.
Who Should Not Take a GLP-1 for Weight Loss?
Wegovy and Zepbound both carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. Both are contraindicated if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or a prior serious allergic reaction to the drug (label, boxed warning; label, boxed warning).
The Wegovy label directs patients to stop it when a pregnancy is recognized and at least 2 months before a planned one, and the Zepbound label warns it may cause fetal harm. Zepbound can also make birth control pills less reliable, so women on oral contraceptives are told to switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase (label, pregnancy and contraception). The NIDDK adds that these medications are not for everyone with a high BMI and should never be used only to change how you look (NIDDK).
What Are the Side Effects of GLP-1 Medications?
Digestive effects lead. In the Wegovy label’s table for adults with obesity or overweight, nausea was reported by 44% of patients on 2.4 mg and 16% on placebo, diarrhea by 30% and 16%, vomiting by 24% and 6%, and constipation by 24% and 11% (label, adverse reactions). In SURMOUNT-1 the most common adverse events were also digestive, mostly mild to moderate and mostly during dose increases (SURMOUNT-1 trial, PubMed). The labels also warn about pancreatitis and gallbladder disease, and I walk through each warning in Ozempic side effects.
Do You Regain the Weight After Stopping a GLP-1?
Most people probably regain some body weight. The NIDDK explains that you probably will after stopping a weight medication, and that your clinician may advise staying on it long term if it works and you have no serious side effects (NIDDK).
The numbers come from the STEP 1 extension, which followed 327 participants for a year after semaglutide and the lifestyle program both stopped. They had lost 17.3% by week 68 and regained 11.6 percentage points by week 120, about two thirds, and the authors label every extension analysis exploratory (STEP 1 extension, PubMed).
How Do You Get GLP-1 Medication Safely Online?
The FDA advises getting a prescription from your doctor and filling it at a state-licensed pharmacy. Its telehealth warning signs include no screening or prescription from a licensed doctor, deep discounts that seem too good to be true, and claims that a compounded drug equals an approved one (FDA, concerns with unapproved GLP-1 drugs). The agency also states that compounded versions are not FDA approved and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing, so ask any provider which kind you are getting.
My step-by-step is how to get GLP-1 online. If a telehealth visit is how you want to start, a licensed clinician decides whether a GLP-1 fits you. I link to ShedRx as one place to begin, and I earn a commission if you sign up through my link. Its weight loss page, which I read on October 15, 2026, listed compounded tirzepatide and semaglutide injections, the Wegovy and Zepbound pens and a Foundayo pill, each marked Rx. For a second service, the GobyMeds review reads that company’s own pages and names the gaps.
How Much Do GLP-1 Medications Cost?
That depends on paying out of pocket, using a manufacturer self-pay program, or having insurance that covers weight loss. The NIDDK notes that some plans cover these medications and some do not, so call yours before assuming either way (NIDDK). Prices move, so I keep the dated figures in how much does Ozempic cost.
What Should You Ask Your Doctor Before Starting a GLP-1?
The NIDDK frames the choice as a decision between you and your clinician, weighing likely benefit, side effects, your health conditions and other medications, family history and cost. If you have not lost at least 5% after 12 weeks on the full dose, your clinician will probably advise stopping (NIDDK). So ask what your history rules out, what to do if side effects hit, and the plan if you stop.
What Was My Own GLP-1 Weight Loss Experience?
My experience, not medical advice: I was 47 and about 68 pounds overweight when I started GLP-1 injections in May 2024, and I lost 31 lbs in 14 months. Individual results differ widely.
The typical result is the better yardstick. STEP 1 participants on semaglutide lost an average of 15.3 kg, about 34 lb, over 68 weeks, roughly 16 months (STEP 1 trial, PubMed). My 31 lbs in 14 months is a little under that and in the same range. Trials start people at different weights, I do not name the drug I took here, and one result does not predict yours.
Medical disclaimer: I’m Judy, a woman who took a GLP-1, not a doctor or a registered dietitian. This overview puts label and trial numbers next to my story, and none of it can tell you whether a GLP-1 fits your health history. Check with your own prescriber before you start, switch, pause or stop any medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GLP-1 safe for weight loss?
The approved drugs are labeled for adults who meet the weight and health criteria, with a boxed warning about thyroid tumors seen in rodents and common digestive side effects. Your prescriber weighs the trade-off.
Can you take GLP-1 for weight loss without diabetes?
Yes. Wegovy, Zepbound and Foundayo are labeled for weight reduction in adults with obesity, or overweight plus a related condition, and the main trials enrolled people without diabetes.
Who can prescribe GLP-1 for weight loss?
A licensed doctor, after screening you. The FDA says to fill it at a state-licensed pharmacy.
Does insurance cover GLP-1 for weight loss?
Some plans do and some do not. Ask your plan about your specific medication before you pay for a fill.
Are there GLP-1 pills for weight loss?
Yes. The Wegovy tablet and Foundayo are labeled for weight reduction in adults, while Wegovy and Zepbound also come as weekly injections. A pill still needs a prescription.
How long do people stay on GLP-1 for weight loss?
It varies. The NIDDK states that it depends on whether the drug helps you keep weight off and whether serious side effects appear, and some people stay on indefinitely.
